How Air Purifiers Can Help
The most effective ways to improve the quality of indoor air is to eliminate pollutant sources and let in pure outdoor air. Room air purifiers are a great option when the methods listed above are insufficient or impossible.
Air purifiers for rooms are created to purify the air in one room, not the whole home. (A whole-house system is connected to the heating, ventilation, and the air conditioner.) Room air purifiers aid in reducing the indoor air pollution, there are limitations to what they can accomplish.
What Air Purifiers Do Well
air purifiers that perform well in the tests of CR prove that in our labs they are effective in removing dust smoke, pollen, and smoke out of the atmosphere. Numerous studies of air purifiers for rooms show that the use of HEPA filters can result in reductions of 50% or more of particulate matter. In a study conducted in 2018 of more than 130 homes, filtering resulted in 30 percent less fine particles, like dust.
What impact does this have on your health? Almost a dozen studies--including ones conducted in Vancouver, British Columbia; Taipei, Taiwan; and Massachusetts--looked at the cardiovascular effects of air purification and showed improved cardiovascular health among participants. A EPA study review (PDF) discovered that purified air produced small improvements in at least one area of health that is related to allergies, for example. The asthmatic participants of an investigation conducted of University of California, Davis (PDF). University of California, Davis (PDF) and reported the reduction of 20% in visits to the clinic.
There are a few cautions. Medical and scientific communities have not yet conclusively linked the usage of air purifiers to health benefits. This is because the the health benefits reported are not consistent with respect to the participants and there are only a few studies that have been conducted over a long period of time. Furthermore, there were different variables in play like the routine use of vacuum cleaners (CR can help you select one of these as well) or pillows and the elimination of pets from bedrooms and the bedroom, which all impact the outcomes.
In the case of the coronavirus air purifiers that have HEPA filters can capture drops of virus that it moves through (when people speak, cough and breathe). However, you'll need a device that continuously draws in enough air to minimize viruses.
What Air Purifiers Don't Do
Air purifiers can eliminate allergens, but only while they're suspended in the air. More hefty, more heavy allergens like mites, mold and pollen, fall on the ground in such a way that air purifiers aren't able to capture the particles in time.
What We Don't Yet Know
Radon is a different area of blindness in air purifiers. Research isn't conclusive about air purifiers' capability to fight this deadly gas. There's not enough research on air purifiers to tackle gases as a whole and it's not clear whether they're effective in this regard. There aren't many studies on the impact of ionizers and purifiers for air on health.
We'll now turn to another important aspect to consider: the many types of air purifier technology available.
